June 2017 Meeting

Attendance & Membership:

We had 48 in attendance and no visitors

Hospitality House - Cindy Conrad:

Celia Shanks brought labels that were handed out in case anyone needed to use them for the back of a Hospitality House quilt. The Hospitality House meeting this year is August 14th - the 2nd Monday of August due to a conflict with the HH staff. We will meet in the meeting room at the Cheyenne Building of the Methodist Medical Center on Oak Ridge Turnpike. This year's theme is "Wrapped in Warmth" and we have a flyer available to explain the suggested colors, sizes, use of fabric, etc. Quilts will be judged and prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Are you ready?

Block Drawing/Fat Quarter Exchange -- Julie Niles:

Julie Niles and Sassy Foster won the FQ drawing...nice selection of 30's fabric!

Block Exchange is due at the July meeting. Directions for a pattern called "PICNIC" were handed out. The pattern comes from the June/July 2017 edition of McCall's Quick Quilts (see attached). Colors to use are a solid-appearing blue, and the second color can be either a red, white, or cream print. We are not using denim this time (just in case you go by the original pattern instead of what Julie typed up).

Pillowcases for Children's Hospital - Lynda McLaren :

Lynda reminded us to pick up fabric from the donation table and to contribute fabric as we can. She will continue to have a table setup for this purpose. Many pillowcases are being turned in. Pillowcases are due in November, but Linda is accepting them anytime!

UFO's - Allison Darken :

15 members are participating. Be sure to email Allison with your list of UFO's at
darkena@bellsouth.net and get busy finishing those UFO's. Prizes will be awarded.

Round Robin - Narda Hipsher (absent):

We had the 2nd swap at the June meeting. Get ready to bring your pizza boxes back to the September meeting, since we will be a the Methodist Medical Center for our August meeting! This will be the big reveal of finished round robins!

Other Announcements/Reminders

Workshop Announcements:

Chenille Scarf - POSTPONED due to the unexpected death of Connie Dean's mother-in-law. This class will be rescheduled.

New Year's Star class  - to be taught by Anita Chaisty on June 24th at the Civic Center. The Guild will cover the cost of the class by paying the instructor but members will pay $12.00 per person and non-members will pay $15.00 as they register for the class. The Guild will reimburse the members but will not reimburse non-members. This is being done to insure we have good participation to support the class.

UPDATE: We had great participation for this class and Wanda Somers did a great job getting everything organized for us! Lots of pretty New Year's Star quilts were started!

Program & Speaker -

Celia discussed ways to get to know others quilters through getting involved in some of the local "BEEs". Here's a list of some of the ones discussed:

- Friday's - 10 to 4, the Senior Center meets in Civic Center in the Craft Room (should be over 55 years of age) - no charge

- Tuesday Bee - 10:30 to 2, Cokesbury, Kingston Pike, Knoxville - $5 per month or $60 yearly

- Thursday Bee - also at Cokesbury

Please send information on other BEEs to me so I can keep all information with regard to the BEEs in one place! - Verilyn

Some discussion took place about the information Peggy Durgin, our speaker in May, shared with us. They could always use small quilts for girls up to 18 years of age and for boys younger than 12. If anyone wants to volunteer to gather up any individual lap quilts made by our members and get them to the Child Advocacy Center, let us know. Some ideas for helping with fundraisers was discussed.

July speaker: Margaret Wildi from Twisted Sisters Quilt Shop.
